Born in 1950 in Ashnak, Armenia; died there in 2022
The artist is one of Armenia’s best–known and most influential artists. He studied at the Terlemezyan Art College in Yerevan until 1974. From 1978 to 1980, he lived in Moscow, Russia, and moved in artistic circles. Hovsepian is one of the pioneers of video art in the USSR. He took part in numerous exhibitions in Armenia and abroad, including the 1994 exhibition on Armenian abstraction at the Artists’ Union Gallery. In 2001, he co-represented Armenia at the Venice Biennale and exhibited at the National Gallery of Armenia. In 2009, he took part in the Istanbul Biennial.
The artist lived in his birthplace, Ashnak, situated roughly halfway between Yerevan and Gyumri. He converted his house into an art centre and taught art at the local art school. He died in 2022 during the Covid pandemic.
